I like SOCCER but it's not the best sport. It's a good sport but not the best sport. Where is the manliness(no hom0) or the toughness? Yeah running up and down a field for 3 hours gets tiring but FOOTBALL is a man's sport.

Educate me some and i might become a fan.. I do like FIFA.

Boom, if you have ever played soccer competitively, you would know that it is easily one of the most physically demanding sports. The games are actually really aggressive too. If you and another guy are chasing after a stray ball, you aren't just gonna run side by side holding hands. Theres a lot of underhand stuff going on, it can get dirty, especially British soccer.

A good sport isn't judged on it's manliness. It's judged on it's necessity for athleticism and intelligence. You would be a certifiable idiot to say that it doesn't take any of those two. I'm not saying you didn't though.

The best way to fathom the skill is to actually try what they're doing. The kick that they're taking from (what you think is) 10 feet away, is much farther than you think. Then, bend the ball just like he did. Then, get some crazy foreign defenders that want to rape your mother. Then, get 30,000 psychopathic fans, screaming in your face and ripping down the stands to kill you.

I know, a little dramatic, but it's obviously not for everyone. There is toughness, but it's not, knock your teeth out tough. It's endurance tough. There is the physical toughness after running up and down for 3 hours and getting cleeted in the ankle and getting back up and doing it again.

Oh and getting cleeted is in the top 5 most painful common things to happen to me in sports.

Ya jeff I was too lazy to ctrl+v.

But football is very phsically demanding and requires the most endurance. The longest game I ever played was a 90 minute game that we tied, then had a 30 min over time then penalty shootouts. The game started at 10. And ended at 1. You'll never feel more tired then that anytime else. And you can't really compare am. Football and real football cause they both require different athletes. Am. Football needs big strong guys. Real football needs toned, quick, sexy, guys. And your legs will never be the same after a season of real football. It's boring to watch for most people. But I find it entertaining.

Liverpool can suck my left nut. Except for alonso and torres of course.

And ronaldo played much better then messi. Even though he was taking cheap shots on puyol. The only reason they lost was cause of their defense. They were playing like shit. How do you have ronaldo Rooney tevez and berba in and not score wtf. I'm sad marquez missed the final though.

lol at 100% perfect physical shape. That's all relative to your sport. You can't say the world's best lawyer is going to be the best marketing manager, that's just comparing apples and oranges. Michael Jordan sucked dick at baseball. In a sport like american football, players train to become big and muscular by following strict weightlifting (usually large weight and low reps) and dieting regimens developed by their personal trainer who probably makes six figures.

Anoxy
06-01-2009, 11:58 PM
In soccer, on the other hand, players are working on training to meet the demands of muscular endurance, which is usually high reps and lower weight so that their bodies can last/perform longer. They are doing high intensity cardiovascular sessions so that they can be moving throughout all 90 minutes of the game continuously and are able to make that long sprint up the sideline or to goal. I rarely see a professional soccer player who has more than 6% bodyfat...they are in top shape for what they are paid to do. If soccer players trained like football players, they would sacrifice that speed and quickness for body mass which is next to obsolete (unless you're a defender) in soccer. Arguably one of the top players in soccer right now is Lionel Messi and he is only 5'2"!

Point is, they are good sports in their own aspects, and Americans may never understand soccer the way that europeans do, or cycling the way that europeans do. But, in my opinion, don't knock something until you've played at its highest level.

I prefer indoor over outdoor. It's so much more fast paced due to no throw ins, and the small amount of people playing at a time gives you a much more active role.

Anoxy
06-03-2009, 02:15 PM
Well, the inconsistencies with outdoor soccer in america is that the fields are always horrible and the grass is far too long. The grass should really be a tad longer than golf greens....but we get fucking swamps. So, yes I would agree, unless I am playing on turf, indoor soccer is a lot more fun. But if I have a nicely shaven outdoor field, I will choose that first because you get to make better runs, play long balls and get nice crosses and such.

so? you still have a small net with a goalie in it, which when has his pads on, takes up the majority of the net.

I used to love soccer. I always played outdoor because indoor was during hockey. I actually used to play goalie as well. I'd say soccer players are the most in-shape athletes as far as professional sports go. Without the use of steroids (Baseball, football) that is.

Hockey is an amazing sport, and I looooveee watching it...they don't have a hockey team here so during winter term I would go down to University of Oregon and watch their club team play...they are pretty damn good.

But, honestly, if you can't appreciate soccer because they don't score a lot of goals, then you are a lost cause. The point is to watch their touches, their amazing passes, footwork, speed, tackles, keeper saves, shots, strategies, and insane free kicks bent around walls of people. Few goals is more fun because it makes them that much sweeter...it's like getting head for 60 minutes and then blowing your load finally when they score. If you don't like it, you don't like it...go watch american football.

Ya anoxy i love watching hockey too. Soccer is so satisfying to watch when your watching the right teams. When you watch an MLS team, it makes me want to vomit. They play so terribly and boring. Our college soccer is the cause of this mainly. If you watch national teams play then you can really appreciate it. Watch one game from the confederations cup coming up in 2 weeks i think? thats when you can really enjoy it. or watch a match with soccer fans and you'll love it.

I have played on some of the worse pitches ever. When i went to mexico, i played on the best pitch I have ever seen. it made me play the game so much differently, quick touches and fast low passes. it was amazing

Anoxy
06-03-2009, 09:18 PM
Yeah the surface really changes the game. I love college soccer, it's some of the most intense soccer because it's so fast paced.

DRD.
06-04-2009, 01:45 PM
Indoor> outdoor. I think my favorite part is just how fast paced it is. I used to play then tore my ACL and MCL. Couldn't do anything for 10 months and just couldn't get back into it. I ref now though so its still fun to be a part of it.

Swimming has the most in-shape athletes, most definitely. But, every professional athlete is fit as fuck obviously.

Soccer amazes me, especially the goalies. Do they really have that fast reflexes or do they just have educated guesses on where the ball is going to go, lol.

Once again, "most in-shape" is all relative to your sport of choice. Lance Armstrong is a fucking animal on the bike, but when he ran the New York Marathon to promote Livestrong, he said it was the most difficult thing he's ever done.

So.......stop throwing around that term.

The only reason why football isnt shown on usa networks is because the inability to show commercials during the game. During half time is when people walk away from the TV and they can't capitalize on revenue. The sport is growing and ticket sells from the World Cup show that besides South Africa, USA has the most ticket sales

Get some reading comprehension. I acknowledged that soccer is the most popular sport in the world. You seem to have a problem with the fact (yes fact) that soccer simply is not that popular in this country (which is the country which you live in). You are an American citizen. Your passport says it, your social security card proves it. If you get into trouble in a foreign country you would run to an American embassy. There is no world embassy. Any foreigner would consider you an American not a world citizen. Your little world point is getting a little bit redundant.

So keep trying to press the same thing over and over, I will keep proving that soccer is not that popular in the USA.

Anoxy
07-14-2009, 04:07 PM
LOL at you changing your argument now.

I don't give a shit about the United States. While you've been over there singing yankee doodle, I've been explaining that it's indeed the most popular in the world, which, frankly, is what matters.

I could care less if it's not "popular in the United States"
We all know that's because 45 minutes without commercials is completely unheard of on American television. Our country would fall into another recession without advertisements every time out and penalty.

So keep trying to press the same thing over and over, I will keep proving that soccer is not that popular in the USA.

lol the irony...

tubby

How am I changing my argument? I've been saying the same thing over and over again (in response to you saying the same thing over and over again). Congrats, it's the most popular sport in the world, but not in the US. It doesn't get TV coverage here because the general American public does not find it interesting. People think it's too slow and not enough scoring goes on. The same thing happened to the NHL (which is why it has lost popularity in recent years).

also I guess you forgot your comprehension again, I will keep proving my points if you keep trying to prove your points. It's not irony, it's me stating what I'm going to do.

also I guess you forgot your comprehension again, I will keep proving my points if you keep trying to prove your points. It's not irony, it's me stating what I'm going to do.
Exactly, it's not as popular here, but what I'm trying to say is that the USA's opinion doesn't mean squat to the other 95% of the world's population.

And yet, In 1994, when we hosted the FIFA World Cup, it had the highest attendance of any single-sport event in U.S. history.

Define attendance. FIFA World Cup entails multiple games. If multiple games are going on of course it will have more attendance than a say a single baseball or basketball game. Unless the stadium in use held like 100,000 people.

I guess I'm trying to say what do you mean by single sporting event. a world cup isn't a single event, it's like a tournament. a single event would be the super bowl or any random baseball game.

Single-sport event.

The world series is a single-sport event.

More people in the US have played competitive soccer at some point of their lives than football.

I don't have proof, but it is definitely something I've experienced in the places I've lived. Far more kids playing rec soccer than football. We have like 2 rec football leagues where I live, and something like 15+ soccer ones. I'm sure this stands true in many places in the country, if not the majority. It's more accessible than football is due to its very pick up and play nature.

And Rhys is right about why it isn't seen on TV here. There will be maybe 2 commercial breaks in an entire game of soccer, which just won't fly in the states. If that were to be overcame, I could see Soccer becoming the most popular sport in the USA within 10 years, especially if we do good in the World Cup.

Soccer is more parent friendly and doesn't require any equipment other than a soccer ball and shin guards? a lot of parents don't want their little kid playing football because it's violent. also soccer is available for girls to play whereas that's not the case with football(rare cases allow girls to play but come on, no one wants to see some huge ass girl play football).

Soccer has a huge recreational base but as kids get older they migrate to other sports (football, baseball, basketball and various other high school sports(field hockey, volleyball, lacrosse)).

More people in my town/school go to Football games than soccer games, even though our soccer team is actually good. However, the majority of us socialize at the football games, whereas at the soccer games, we actually watch.

idk, just something else I wanted to add. Maybe we're just weird. I know places down south take football in HS a LOT more seriously than we do.

This.

My high school was the same way. We just socialized and barely watched the football game because it's so stop and go and there's so much opportunity for conversation.

I never really watched soccer games cause I was playing but there weren't as many people there even though we were very good, and when there were a lot of people, they were watching the game and cheering as opposed to sitting down and cuddling under blankets while holding conversations.

You're west coast and I'm east coast so I'm gonna assume everyone in between did the same thing. :D

I understand where you are coming from tubby, but you are comparing MLS popularity to every other soccer match being played around the world. MLS is a terrible league right now, they play ugly, boring soccer and isn't something American fans are too fond of. I am a huge soccer fan but i can honestly say i havent watched a full game of MLS soccer cause it's just terrible.

But that does not mean that soccer isn't popular in the USA. Most soccer fans are more interested in international teams and European leagues. The problem with that is ESPN doesn't hold the rights to any of those league games. The only right ESPN has is Champions League, UERO cup (which is every 4 years), and World cup (also every 4 years). Those games when shown on ESPN have great ratings. ESPN just got the rights to England Premier League and i guarantee they will be showing those games on ESPN.

When you look at World Cup ticket sales. The top 3 go like this. 1. South Africa (the WC is being held in SA so of course they have the most) 2. USA (now why would USA have the second most sales even though it isn't popular here?) 3. England (England always has the most support for their team). Also tubby soccer is so dangerous, One bad tackle could mess up your ankles for life, like me. Redundantly saying we live in America and it isn't popular here! is just dumb. We have people living in this country from all over the world and they bring their love for soccer with them. The only problem is, people have no way of watching their favorite league/team because it is not being broadcast ed. So what I'm trying to say is to a non soccer fan, it looks very unpopular because MLS is very unpopular, but our USA national team is very much popular, our games sell out and the viewing audience is great. Our womens NAtional team is ranked #1 in the world and won the world cup, they have a good following too.

My friend lived in FL for 2 years, and went to the #1 Football school in Florida, and they were in the top 10 in the country. They also take it a lot more seriously because all of the damn kids down there are fucking beasts, and are all going to D1 schools. He said everyday was football, that's it. Nothing else.
