View Full Version : Influential Movies/Books
Just list some deep movies/books that really made you think, or gave you new beliefs which you applied to your life.
Into the Wild (book)- True story of a law-school grad that abandoned all of his money and possessions to live off of the land in Alaska. Probably my favorite book of all time. Don't see the movie though it's fucking terrible.
Fight Club- Self explanitory seeing as how the majority of you guys are Fight Club fans. The book is better imo, anything by Chuck seems to be worth reading.
The Wackness (Movie)- In the midst of a midlife crisis, psychiatrist Dr. Squires (Ben Kingsley) forms a relationship with teenage drug dealer Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck), who trades his product for therapy sessions. Luke falls for the doctor's daughter. Drugs, depression, relationships and New York City are the focus of this comedic film (winner of the Audience Award: Drama at Sundance) from sophomore director Jonathan Levine.
^Summary by Netflix, which if you have, add it the the queue NAO and watch it from yo XBox^

One of my favorites of all time.
Ayn Rand books, We the Living/ Atlas Shrugged/ The Fountainhead. The Fountainhead is probably the best read but I think Atlas Shrugged was my fav, they're all pretty much based around the philosophy of Objectivism n such. Really interesting and philosophical stories.
V for Vendetta is one of my top 5 favorite movies as well
If you liked 1984 you should read Brave New World, it's along the same lines and better (imo)

I read the first 5 chapters of brave New World for my English Term paper 2 years ago. I couldn't get into it, so I spark notes'd the rest of it and got a 98 on it.
I read the ending though and it was fucking wild.

Brave New World had a very weak ending, imo. It's a very conceptual novel with poor plot execution and little closure.
If you've never read Ender's Game, do so. As a gamer you will love it more than most books you'll ever read.
Also, if you like Chuck P then read everything you can by Philip Roth. Start with Portnoy's Complaint and work through.
As far as deep movies go, I would first read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick and then watch Blade Runner. Movie is based on the book, and the book will open you up to dimensions of the movie you likely never realized were there.

V for Vendetta as a graphic novel was actually way better than the movie. Y'all should read that if you liked the movie.
And I really liked The Five People You Meet In Heaven (book).

Also, Green Grass Running Water by Thomas King is a really good book that focuses on what the "white man" has turned the world into after basically destroying Native American culture. It takes a really funny, light hearted approach though.

gimme something I can eat tacos, masturbate, and post on the forums while watching.

So my quote button doesn't seem to want to load, but BuffaloDave brought up Blade Runner. That's actually based on the book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K. Dick (you didn't mention it, so maybe you didn't realize?). I was assigned to read that in one of my classes a couple years back, but never actually did. Just from listening to the summaries and discussions on it it sounds like a pretty interesting read. I'm just a a believer that the books are always better than the movies, so if you liked the movie than the book should be even better :).

More good movies please. I have a nice list of them I gotta see now. Harold and Kumar go to White Castle is pretty influential imo.
Also, the same guy who wrote Into The Wild wrote Into Thin Air. It's about when he climbed Everest and things went astray, it's a pretty intense read, and shows how the human mind works in some weird ways.
